Kathryn is an award-winning artist with a BA in Fine Art. She lived in many places before settling in San Diego, starting with her home state, Alaska. From ghost towns to large cities, she has experienced various countries & cultures. This variety is reflected in her art with her use of many genres and media. Her art often addresses events that have touched her life in a personal way, choosing materials and mode that best express the subject, embedding layers of meaning. By painting from her own experience, she hopes her art will strike just the right chord with others. Although her artwork often focuses on the figure, she especially enjoys painting the San Diego landscape. “I can never tire of this beautiful place and never forget the blessing of living here in this uplifting community.” Being mix-handed deeply influences her art, thinking and reactions. Active in numerous galleries, Kathryn’s work hangs in private collections all over the world, as well as in a large public collection in Idaho.
StatementWhen I make art, I start with a subject, think about what visual elements would best express what I am saying about that subject with my art. Sometimes it takes months to compile all of the found objects, or do studies in various media, to come up with the best fit for that subject. I like to experiment. I have the story in my head first, and then express it in my artwork. But as I work, I let the artwork guide me and lead me to discoveries, flexible with my initial decisions. The subject is my springboard.
